Preventing Food Waste

Some food waste can be prevented. It is often excess food (ie leftovers) or food which has ‘gone off’ or mouldy.

Currently, roughly 44% of your burgundy bin is food waste.

Half of this (overall 22%) was food waste which could have been prevented!

But what food waste could be prevented and how?

Preventable food waste:

  • Expired products (eg milk)

  • Uneaten leftovers

  • Burnt rice

  • Potatoes

  • Mouldy food

  • Wilted salad

Inevitable food waste:

  • Eggshells

  • Meat and/or fish bones

  • Citrus peels

  • Tea bags

  • Vegetable ends (eg carrot tops)

  • Banana peels

Start saving food and money today using these 3 top tips!

1. Stop before you shop!

Meal planning is one of the best ways you can reduce waste and save money on your food bills.

Start by checking your fridge, freezer and cupboards and try to use up what you already have.

Write a list of what you need and stick to it!

2. Keep it fresh!

To keep food in your fridge fresher for longer, be sure to set the fridge below 5°C.

3. Love your leftovers!

Use your leftovers to create delicious meals.

If you have some dinner left in the pan and it can be re-heated, put it in a tuppaware and pop it in the freezer as a ‘ready meal’ for one.
